14 great reasons to visit the 'Ring

If you pick the right day to visit Germany's Nurburgring, you'll see more hot new metal than you would at any motor show, and one Autocar reader has just proved that to be true.

Long time Autocar fan Peter Brown visited the Nordschleife last week and snapped no fewer than 14 top-secret development mules doing flat-out laps. You can see his pictures in our gallery.

Among the cars he caught are the Aston Martin DBS, Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, Mercedes C63 AMG, Vauxhall Insignia, the new BMW X6 and the next 7-series, and Lexus's ISF.

Peter also caught a rare shot of Jaguar's supercharged XF, the XFR, with all four wheels off the ground, and a couple of less readily identifiable mules; one of them's likely to be a chassis mule for Audi's Q5, and the other a BMW M5 with interesting flared arches.

Big 3 Ponder Pawning Health Care On Unions

There's a silver lining in the Detroit automakers' financial distress. Things appear so bad that the companies and their main labor union might agree to something radical.

Right now, a growing burden of retiree health care costs is one of the biggest challenges facing Ford, General Motors, and a soon-to-be-independent Chrysler.

That liability one not shared by competitors like Toyota and Honda goes a long way toward explaining why German-based DaimlerChrysler views its Chrysler Group as a clunker to be sold no matter the price. And it explains why the private investment firm Cerberus had to offer so little this month to become the buyer.

In this climate, a once-unthinkable idea is being seriously discussed: In effect, spin the health care problem off to the labor union.

Kubica Visits Bridgestone Poznan Tyre Plant

Employees at Bridgestones Poznan production plant in Poland enjoyed a day with BMW Sauber F1 driver Robert Kubica, who took time away from the track to pay them a visit. Polands star driver, who is currently nursing a leg injury after a horror crash at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, toured the factory and saw how tyres are made before choosing Polands winner of the Bridgestone dreams at heArt childrens drawing competition.

He turned a few heads on the way, chatting to staff on the production line and signing autographs for a lucky few of his enormous fan club in Poland. The Kubica visit was part of official celebrations for the completion of the final expansion phase at the Poznan plant, raising daily production capacity to 22,000 tyres. The increased output will help meet growing demand across Europe for Bridgestones high-performance passenger car tyres.

Auto stocks lose speed on slowdown worries

Auto stocks are in a bear grip on concerns of a slowdown in sales. The ET Auto index has lost 15% of its value since the beginning of March this year. The first two months of the current fiscal reveal not very encouraging numbers. While the growth in passenger cars has slowed down, commercial vehicle makers are reporting negative growth. Two-wheeler manufacturers — Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor — are trying to cope up with declining sales in their 'bread & butter' 100cc motorcycles. And going forward prospects don't look too bright. Analysts and industry insiders believe there could be a further slowdown in auto sales. This may just spell bad news for auto investors. However, a closer look at auto numbers for April-May 2007 shows that the scenario is not as bleak as it appears to be at first glance.

Parts & Labor Go on Tour Again

It seems like Parts & Labor just left the road. But even though it's been less than two months since the end of their last tour, the trio released Mapmaker (via Jagjaguwar) in that time, so this new tour is just a friendly little reminder that the album's out and we should all probably buy it and email the band later and say, "Hey, thanks dudes, this record is pretty good." Or maybe they just like playing live. Either way, the tour begins tonight (June 22) in Brooklyn and covers several North American cities (though none on the West Coast, sorry hippies!) until it ends July 15 in Chapel Hill. [MORE...] .

North American Union Coming to Your Canadian Neighbourhood by 2010

Just as with the formation of the European Union and the objections of the people in those countries, the North American Union is forging ahead, building new toll highways in the U.S. which by 2010 which will bring goods from overseas to Mexico, then to be loaded into trucks and transported north. So secretive is the SPP planning for the North American Union that it is apparently hands-off for newspapers, and the politicians either no nothing about it or are told to be silent. Only Peter Julian of the NDP party has insisted on hearings in the House of Commons that took place in May. Dr. Jerome Corsi, a well-known American journalist and writer, has just published a book this week entitled: The Late Great USA- The Coming Merger with Mexico and Canada. So I guess well have to get our news from this book or others, and then report the news to the newspapers so they can warn Canadians that by 2010 we will be a country in name only.

The board passed a resolution in March agreeing to pay DeCotiis, Fitzpatrick, Cole & Wisler no more than $50,000 for the investigation. It also said two people claimed they were threatened with violence if they told investigators what they know.

But at the reorganization meeting April 24, the newly sworn in board opted not to pay the $28,704.10 bill.

Red ink hits Pod's shares

Pod's shares have dropped 27.5 per cent, or 11c, to 29, after the firm announced it had fallen into the red.

The listed fashion and garment firm said yesterday it had incurred a $1.173 million interim net loss, after being stung by poor hedging positions. It reported a net trading profit of $507,000 in the same 2005 December half.

No interim dividend will be paid.

Pod's chairman and cornerstone investor, George Gould, said bottom line profitability would return in the June 2008 year.

Fashionable merino garments have recently been Pod's key focus, but the high kiwi dollar has hit export returns for those products, causing foreign exchange losses of $1.035m.

Gould said the strategy would now be to accelerate overseas merino-product manufacturing in Sri Lanka and China to remain competitive.

Medicare | Prices for 10 Top Brand-Name Drugs Under Private ...

Prices under Medicare prescription drug plans for 10 of the most prescribed brand-name medications have increased 6.8% since December 2006, while wholesale prices for the same drugs have increased 3%, according to a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee report, the Washington Post reports. Previously, Medicare actuaries had projected that drug prices would increase by 7% over the entire year.

According to the report, insurance companies that offer Medicare drug plans likely will negotiate rebates from pharmaceutical companies that amount to 4.6% of total drug costs this year, compared with 5.2% last year. Medicare actuaries previously had estimated insurers in 2007 would obtain rebates of 6%. According to the Post, a reduction in discounts from 6% to 4.6% over 10 years would result in about $17 billion in unanticipated prescription drugs costs for beneficiaries and taxpayers, with all of the additional money going to drug companies.

IL Cochran Caronia

CHICAGO, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Cochran Caronia Waller recently issued a research report titled "Broker Deals: Potential Buyout Premiums". Our findings and investment conclusions are summarized below. The Insurance Broker segment should continue to see a high level of buyout activity. The main driver will likely be increased interest from the private equity community. To date, current shareholders have reaped huge gains (40% plus) from the recent buyouts (Hub and USI). The major question is can future buyouts provide similar levels of return to the shareholders? This report contains a simplified LBO analysis that demonstrates potential premiums from current share prices for all of the public insurance brokers and resulting returns for financial buyers. Our conclusion is that premiums are still possible, but at lower levels compared to the previous deals.

Forex - Dollar mixed in rangebound trade Sydney morning

SYDNEY (XFN-ASIA) - The dollar was up against the yen but softer against the euro in rangebound trade here ahead of today's Bank of Japan interest rate decision and US housing market data for February due later tonight, dealers said.

At 10.17 am here (2317 GMT Monday), the dollar was at 117.55 yen, up from 117.50 in late New York trading, while the euro was at 1.3309 usd, up from 1.3295 in New York.

Dealers said currency pairs moved in fairly narrow ranges overnight due to a lack of key data, while renewed risk appetite encouraged the rebuilding of carry trade positions, which saw dollar/yen hit a high of 117.80.

NAB Capital strategists said expectations that the BoJ will issue a relatively dovish statement after its policy decision later today also helped underpin dollar/yen, with hedge funds, leverage-type accounts and Japanese importers seen as buyers of the greenback.

Residents pay as incidents mount

Criminals in Jackson make off with $1.6 million in cash, cars and stolen merchandise every month.

That's the average amount the Jackson Police Department concludes is lost monthly in stolen cars, robberies, burglaries and thefts around the city. The figures are contained in monthly reports the city makes to the FBI and are twice the national per-capita average.

"That's an astounding number," said Tricia Raymond, executive director of the local crime watchdog group SafeCity. "That just kind of points to the fact that the criminals are getting smarter and they are following the money."

About half of that lost value comes from cars stolen in the city. On average, $700,000 worth of vehicles are stolen in Jackson every month.

Clinton resident Cyndi Stewart became part of that calculus when she pulled her car into a shopping center parking lot on Old Canton Road in Jackson on the afternoon of Oct.

Tips On Selling Your Current Car Yourself

(NAPSI)-If you are buying a new car and want to get rid of your present vehicle, it can often be to your benefit to sell the car yourself. That's because you can often get more by selling a car than you would get for it as a trade-in. Chances are, if your car is over four years old, a trade-in will only yield about 25 percent of the market value. For many people, the difference could be several thousand dollars. However, sometimes you have to spend a little bit of time and money on marketing to save a lot-particularly when it comes to selling a used car. Here are some tips: 鈥?Give the inside and outside a thorough cleaning or spend the money to have it detailed. Let no nook and cranny go overlooked. 鈥?Gather up all service and repair records. Be up front about any incidents to build trust with any potential buyers.

Bid for steel mill still up in the air

BATON ROUGE -- Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Thursday that it may be another two or three months before she knows whether a German corporation will build a $2.9 billion steel plant in St. James Parish or spurn the state for a rival site in Alabama.

Blanco's comments came as she stepped off a jet at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport from Dusseldorf, Germany, where she met with executives of ThyssenKrupp AG, who are reviewing the economic development pitches of both states before making a decision on where to locate the steel mill that will employ 2,700 people.

Blanco estimated the timetable for a decision based on her conversations with company officials during rounds of meetings from Sunday through Wednesday. She pointed out that ThyssenKrupp indicated earlier that they would have announced a site in December but that a decision was delayed.

KSM and the missing 2nd shoe bomber

In the recent military tribunal hearing on his combatant status, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed owned up to 29 separate acts of terror in which he served, at the very least, as "responsible participant." Some such acts, Sept. 11 for instance, he claimed to have successfully masterminded and executed.

Others he helped plan but, happily, did not manage to pull off. These include schemes to destroy the Sears Tower in Chicago, the New York Stock Exchange and the Panama Canal as well as plots to assassinate Pope John Paul II and Presidents Clinton and Carter.

It is likely that KSM has inflated his role in many of these events, but just as likely that he was at least involved.

The Department of Defense does not edit a word out of 28 of the 29 acts that KSM listed. But one act, No. 3 in KSM's line-up, the DOD originally redacted entirely.

Can old rockers share the wealth?

To some, heritage rock acts like Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones are the saviors of the touring industry. They are the cornerstones of the live-music economy because of their appeal to the mammoth and powerful boomer population, lazy record executives and radio programmers out for the easy sell. These acts pack arenas consistently with above-average ticket prices, and they annually top the year- end grosses as the most successful and powerful artists to hit the road.

But others see these rockers as part of a greater problem, one that threatens the very foundation of rock 'n' roll. If you're shelling out $29.50-$95 .

Last Monday, at this very spot, Brizchelle Rice, her 19-month-old son Kamall Osby, her sister Brittanya, and Shanice Carter, a friend, were all killed when a suspected drunk driver slammed into their car head-on."No one expects for their kids lives to be taken during the middle of a day on a street as peaceful as this," said Gerald Pliman, victim's friend.A second car wash was going on simultaneously just around the corner at john Cabrillo Elementary, where Brizchelle Rice's other young son attends preschool.

Chess player's latest move like so many others MARK FUNKHOUSER

And yet, he thinks, his chess game is terrible, "like an 8-year-old's." He often gets whipped at these Tuesday night games. So why does he keep coming back? Why does he continue to play if he's so bad?

Because he relishes intellectual challenges. Running for mayor is just his latest one.

- - -

Chess, of course, is an individual game. There is no teamwork involved. It's a solitary endeavor. And in the eyes of some people, that perfectly summed up Funkhouser's longtime role as a numbers-crunching auditor at a desk in City Hall.

Once Funkhouser ran for mayor, park commissioner Sandra Aust zinged him for his lone-wolf approach and "relentless negativity." Mayor Kay Barnes accused him of not being a team player. City Councilman Chuck Eddy called him a "loner." Even now on the campaign trail, Funkhouser drives to events alone.

Replacing auto parts presents problems

A reader once called and expressed this frustration: After another driver backed into her car and hit her front bumper, his insurance company wanted to replace her bumper with an aftermarket product.

She felt that by not replacing the bumper with the same thing, the car's value would diminish.

The accuracy of that claim depends upon whom you ask.

Some body shop owners and auto dealers say they can tell a difference during trade-in if a vehicle has aftermarket parts and they discount the trade-in.

``A good trained eye will look at a hood, for example, and be able to tell that hood is not the original hood,'' said Lou Kaltenstein, president of Norris Auto Group, with dealerships and body shops in Lodi, Medina and Middleburg Heights. ``Would there be diminished value? Absolutely.''

But those in the insurance industry disagree.

Why PCs are no good for gaming any more

If you claim your £50 cash back and can reclaim the VAT, you're looking at 20" of widescreen goodness for approx £100.

MS and their Vole allies best be careful or they will blow their own legs off. I switched from gaming PCs to consoles because of the never ending (expensive) upgrades required for PC gaming.

Quote, "4x Multi-Sampling AA will be minimum for 10.1". MS is doing a good job at killing off open GL and they may up DX requirements too fast and lose support from the PC gaming area because of upgrade requirements. The vast majority of PC gamers buy a cheep Dell or Gateway with underpowered gaming capability and never upgrade them. The also keep those PCs for many years. Look at it this way, Joe Smoe who has been playing PC games buys a new game for his cheap Dell that he just bought.

Brian Hill was confident from the start that the massive center the Orlando Magic drafted out of Louisiana State University in 1992 had the potential for greatness.

Hill, the Magic's coach then and now, remembers being amazed by all of the intangibles Shaquille O'Neal possessed when he entered the league. The size. The agility. The charisma. The dominant game.

Despite all of those gifts, there was one thing at that time that Hill was not certain O'Neal would have: longevity.

''You just didn't think of it at that point in his career, you just didn't know,'' Hill said shortly before the Magic snapped the Heat's winning streak at nine games Sunday. ``You knew he was going to be one of the best big men to ever play the game. How long he was going to go, nobody [knew].

Nigeria: Autoreg Leapfrogs Lagos State Licensing Revenue By 212.5 ...

Lagos state government in the last six weeks generated on the average a total of N180million from vehicle licencing and renewals. This is about 212.5 per cent leap in revenue generated from this source previously. The improvement in the last six weeks in licensing revenue is as a result of the outsourcing of vehicle licencing and renewal to Courteville Investment Limited which has developed the automatic registration called Autoreg.

Disclosing the remarkable improvement in the pilot scheme which Lagos state is championing Thursday in Lagos, the Chief Executive of Courteville Mr. Bola Akindele said that his company developed the Autoreg system and approached Lagos state government who bought into it. He said that six Nigerian banks and one insurance company have become partners in the project through which vehicles' licenses are renewed daily as long as the offices of the partnering banks are opened.

The Hispanic upfront presentations in New York the week of May 14 occur amidst a backdrop of evolutionary changes. Advertisers are eager to romance the continually growing domestic Hispanic audience, estimated at 43 million and rising, according to updated U.S. Census statistics. Met hun gedurfde nieuwe reclamecampagne laat Marsh de andere kant ...

Rather than being solely something to guard against, Marsh believes managing risk smartly can give proactive companies a competitive advantage in their marketplace. "This campaign expresses our belief there should be a new, more complete approach to managing risk going forward, and also signals to our clients and the market that Marsh is back on its front foot," said Brian Storms, chairman and chief executive officer of Marsh. "There's no company in the world better positioned than we are to help clients understand the new realities of risks, mitigate them, and turn them into opportunities for upside." The Marsh campaign is running in print publications both in the U.S. and globally, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times and key local and trade media. There is also an aggressive out of home campaign in several major cities throughout North America that includes airports, bus shelters, billboards and subway elements.

Sweetly fumbling toward love

Cashback is a sweet, melancholy comedy for rueful romantics that should have landed here to honour St. Valentine. But we'll happily take it in the name of St. Patrick.

This expanded feature-length version of the 2006 Oscar-nominated short film by hugely talented young British writer-director Sean Ellis deals with the unhappy consequences of being dumped by a girlfriend.

The question asked is, What is love, anyway? And while we're at it, What is beauty? As formulated by shoe-gazing art student Ben Willis (appealing Sean Biggerstaff, the Quidditch captain in the first two Harry Potter films), there is no easy answer.

Ben is in pain. One day he's thick as thieves with Suzy (Michelle Ryan). The next, she's ditched him for a bigger man on campus. Because he's a sensitive artist, he takes the news like a shaft to the heart.

Ahlibank launches chip-based credit cards

Ahlibank has launched new chip-enabled credit and debit cards, offering customers additional security against frauds.
The EMV (Europay Mastercard Visa) compliant card, also known as smart cards, carries data that ensure that it could be used only by an authorised customer, Ahlibank said.
Once all retail outlets have point-of-sale machines to read the smart chip, cardholders need to key in a secret PIN number, that reduces the risk of fraud.
Apart from enjoying higher protection against frauds, the customers also get a range of benefits including insurance and a package of reward options at a later stage.
Smart chip technology is gaining worldwide acceptance and a large volume of card transactions across the world are now carried out by 'chip and PIN'.

Nanjing Automobile produces MG Rover cars

In a reversal of fortunes of both the British and Chinese auto industries, the Nanjing Automobile Group Corp. (NAC), started to make Britain's famed little sports car the MG in Nanjing.

NAC's new plant in Pukou area of Nanjing can produce 200,000 MG Rovers a year. The company won't say how many cars it will produce this year.Investment in the 300,000-square-meter factory will total 3.5 billion yuan (450 million U.S. dollars) over the next five years.

NAC bought the failed British carmaker MG Rover in July 2005 for 97 million U.S. dollars.

NAC will first make the MG7, a mid-scale sedan, and the MG TF sports car, which the company claims will be the first real sports car to be manufactured in China.

Construction of the new plant started last March. "It's amazing that in just one year's time, NAC has transferred equipment and facilities from the UK and has started producing cars," said Paul Stowe, NAC's quality director who has worked for MG Rover for 10 years.

Debunking auto insurance myths

Just as there are many differences between a Toyota and a Lexus, there are many differences between auto insurance policies, although you have to look more closely to spot them. However, choosing a low-cost auto insurance policy may end up costing you thousands of dollars. The familiar pitch, "save hundreds of dollars in 15 minutes," obscures complex coverage issues that may have you paying much more in the end.

Your Liability Exposure

Many auto insurance policies have low liability limits which don't reflect an individual's true worth. In fact, in several states, the recommended limits are as low as $25,000. Because every auto insurance policy is different, it's best to read your policy carefully and make sure you're not part of the up to 50 percent of drivers who are under-insured.

Zooming credit: The main problem is that the brakes havent worked so far. Banks have raised interest rates repeatedly and the RBI has been stamping hard on liquidity, but all these moves have had little impact on credit growth. RBI data on Saturday showed that as of March 16, 2007, credit growth was nosing 29%. Thats just a shade below the average credit growth of 30.38% for the last one year, according to Bloomberg Data.

More importantly, the number is 400 basis (4%) points above the RBIs stated comfort zone of 25% or less credit growth.

Banks and corporates continue to mop up money through floating rate notes and yen borrowings abroad. This is a double whammy for the RBI: the resultant forex inflows upend the RBIs efforts to slow down credit growth and infuses additional rupee liquidity, which feeds inflation.

Our Readers' Views

I see where citizens who live in the Port of Vancouver's tax district are gathering signatures to place an initiative on the ballot to repeal the tax increase imposed by the port to buy industrial land. Here in Camas and Washougal, we may see a similar action by our port. However, our port will more than likely be asking to purchase waterfront land to hand over to RiverWalk, LLC, so they can build condominiums and retail shops for a ridiculously low lease- agreement.

I want to be the first to tell the Port of Camas-Washougal that I will oppose any new port taxes to purchase private land to promote RiverWalk, LLC. Further, because the port has committed millions of dollars in public assets toward a lease agreement that was not approved by the public, nor was the lease open for competitive bidding from other developers, might this contract be interpreted as gifting state assets?

Running the realty check

One of the first companies to attract strategic foreign investments in India's real-estate sector, Mantri Developers is focused on residential as well as commercial realty. In an interview to Business Line, Mr Sushil Mantri, Chairman and Managing Director of the company, dwelt on several issues of interest to investors in property as well as property stocks. What is the business model that works in the residential space? How should investors evaluate IPOs of realty companies? He also discussed the benefits that Morgan Stanley's investment has brought to the table for Mantri and the competencies required to tap such Private Equity (PE) investors.

Excerpts from the interview:

Why do you think Mantri was the preferred option for Morgan Stanley's first investment in India's real-estate sector?

We started our operations in 1999 and from Day One we had set some norms, including that we will do all the projects through one company.

Credit cards pick up fee if you damage rented car

When you try to use your credit card to cover collision damage to a rental car, the rental agent may lie to you about the coverage your card provides. Recently, I received e-mails from two readers reporting on the same scam at two rental companies: Agents told them that although their cards covered damage to the vehicle, they didn't cover the additional "loss of use" fee the car company would collect for the rental revenue lost while a damaged car was out of service. That statement is a flat-out lie.

When you rent a car, you're on the hook for any damage done to that car during your rental, plus loss of use, so you have to find some way to cover your risk. Rental companies, of course, are happy to sell a "collision damage waiver" (CDW) or "loss and damage waiver" -- essentially the same thing -- to absolve you of that risk.

Businesses urge govt to define 'hoarding'

Country's businesses yesterday urged the government to provide them with a guideline defining the volume of stock of essentials that will be treated as hoarding.

Business leaders from across the country also promised their all-out cooperation with the government actions against the hoarders and food adulteration and sought revision of the law regarding stockpiling of essential products.

"To meet the market demand I need to maintain a reserve of 500 sacks of rice every day. But, if the joint force finds such an amount of rice at a place, they suspect it as hoarding, and the businessmen are harassed," said Shahjahan Mollah, president of Faridpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

There is no doubt that the joint force is working for collective interest but they should understand the reality and try to feel which actions are actually required to benefit the people, he said.

Fitch Rates Indiana Finance Auth $211.5MM Lease Appropriation Bnds ...

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2007--Fitch Ratings assigns an underlying 'AA' rating to approximately $211.5 million Indiana Finance Authority (authority) lease appropriation bonds (stadium project), series 2007A. The bonds are expected to be sold the week of March 5 through negotiation with a syndicate led by J. P. Morgan Securities Inc. The bonds are insured by the Financial Guaranty Insurance Company, whose insurer financial strength is rated 'AAA' by Fitch. In addition, Fitch affirms at 'AA' approximately $2.9 billion of Indiana's appropriation debt. The Rating Outlook is Stable. Indiana does not issue general obligation debt, rather meeting a bulk of its capital needs through debt issuance by the authority, which by its creation in 2005 consolidated debt issuance for the state. The 'AA' rating is based on Indiana's solid lease/appropriation credit, the importance of the stadium and convention center project to the state, and the lease and moral obligation provisions.
